HELMAUD
Shares ‘Hey Boi ! feat. DIXIE’ music video
RELEASE DATE: 30th September
LABEL: JS Records
Award-winning musician HELMAUD has shared the DIY music video for his latest single, ‘Hey Boi ! ft. DIXIE’ via JS Records. The music video was premiered via Clash Magazine. The single is out now (30th of September) and was mixed by Geoff Swan (Ed Sheran, Mahalia, FKJ) and mastered by Alex Gopher (Sebastian Tellier, Phoenix, Mr Oizo). The producer is an award winner of the Jazz à Saint-Germain-des-Prés festival in 2008 and has subsequently shared a stage with Avishai Cohen as well as appeared live at the Sonar Festival. The producer has created music for high-end luxury brands such as Vogue, Elle and Tiffany & Co while also working with big-names in the Parisian music industry such as My Melody, Because Music and Pain Surprises.
Born and based in Paris, the self-trained pianist has performed at Archspace, Village Underground (UK), co-founded a jazz trio and formally studied at the American School of Modern Music in France. HELMAUD is the anagram of Brad Mehldau and Hélène Grimaud, two of his great influences as a human being and artist. His other influences include the likes of James Blake, Keith Jarret, H.E.R, Daniel Caesar, SZA, EarthGang and J.I.D. However, this single draws parallels to the vocals of Amy Winehouse and Lizzo and the production stylings of RJD2 and Gramatik.
Taking a muscle car to the streets of Paris, with the Eiffel Tower as a backdrop and DIXIE’s powerful vocals dominating the airwaves, ‘Hey Boi !’ encompasses an unstoppable yet empowering attitude. Made with just with an iPhone and iPad, and directed by friend Isabel Deprince, the music video takes a simple concept (driving through a city at night) and elevates it to a battle cry of independence and femininity.
Speaking of the music video, HELMAUD tells us, "After many unsatisfying cuts based on another story from a former director, I decided to change totally and go for a real DIY video. A variation on an old hip hop famous theme: the whip ride - a tribute to American hip hop iconography. We thought this 1964 Cadillac riding along contemporary Paris would fit the soul vibe on the modern beat and attitude of this song. Knowing that Dixie is half American (New Orleans) & I’m a full Parisian, it made sense. No one was in town or available for the last-minute deadline. Then comes Isabel Deprice, an old friend of mine, (who featured in my previous music video "I Know Your Game", shot by Ryan Doubiago). In the end, it was shot in 2 hours with an Iphone & edited with an Ipad.”
