La vie passe tellement vite. Ce sont ces personnes, ces liens qu’on crée de génération en génération qui forment nos valeurs et qui on devient. »

Globetrotteuse, Laura Anglade partage son enfance entre le sud de la France et les États-Unis avant de s’installer à Montréal où elle est depuis reconnue comme une des voix les plus prometteuses de la nouvelle scène jazz. Influencée par le parcours musical de ses parents, la jeune chanteuse de 23 ans s’inspire de ses idoles, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan et Anita O’Day depuis un très jeune âge. La chanteuse a réalisé en 2019 son premier album très justement intitulé I’ve Got Just About Everything. Dotée d’une voix pleine et chaleureuse, ses performances révèlent une interprète à la fois circonspecte et expressive qui maîtrise parfaitement l’art de l’intensité.

Aujourd’hui, la chanteuse prépare la sortie de son album Venez Donc Chez Moi, accompagnée du guitariste Sam Kirmayer dans lequel on retrouve des grands standards de la chanson française revisités avec brio.

“A wildlife freeway is a bridge for animals to safely cross over busy roads, so when we humans are rushing off in cars to our parties, the animals can get to their forest fairy parties too,” says Atema on the project and album. “The name also speaks of wildness and life on the road. The actual road, putting in the miles, brings us eye to eye, connecting without a screen between.”

A few years back after her beloved dog passed away, Sunny Atema packed her real upright piano in the back of her station wagon and toured the entire US. “I was so sad, I died too. I felt like a kite whose string was cut loose, longing for Earth,” she explains. The music shows were raw, both painful and joyful, surrounded by the perfect presence of people beckoning her back to their shared world when she felt disconnected from it. It was in New Orleans on that very tour that she was introduced to Alex Ebert, and soon after they entered the studio together.

“I don’t normally produce other artists, so when Sunny showed up at the studio unannounced, I had no notion of producing anything,” Ebert recalls. “But as soon as she sat down at the baby grand

,

I was inspired. This was a uniquely personal kind of music. I approached the production itself delicately, as if the songs themselves would shatter to pieces if a callous move was made. I wanted to make sure the whole album felt the way I felt when I first heard her at my studio – like we are each being let in on a secret.”

The non-binary artist is dedicated to creating work that unapologetically highlights the experiences and nuances of queer people of color and their new single « Honey » does just that.

KILE J (they/them) is a proud non-binary artist and performer, based in New York City. Originally from Houston Texas, Kile moved to New York to explore their creative talents, and since then has worked with some of the top influencers in the industry. The multi-dimensional artist has many skills under their belt, including comedy, acting, and most significantly music.

Dedicated to creating work that unapologetically highlights the experiences and nuances of queer people of color, the debut EP

Honey

is sensationally vulnerable and encouragingly heartfelt. Serving as a therapeutic outlet, the EP helped them tackle feelings of shame and discomfort, eventually leading them to find self-love. Bursting with lush sugary harmonies that counteract the bittersweet lyrics, the songs speak authentically of their personal experiences. Taking lines directly from journal entries and text messages, Kile revealed, “I found strength singing words that caused me pain, over beautiful warm instrumentals.”

Speaking on the EP, the artist explains, “There are moments where you can only understand if you’re a part of the culture, and there’s also moments where I feel everyone can relate to it in some way.” They continue, “The underlying theme of the project is to tell black queer love stories authentically; not only ones about loving others, but ones about loving yourself as well.”

The title track “Honey” delightfully showcases Kile’s vibey sound, with it being a fusion of southern music, modern pop and R&B. Smoothly soulful and trickled with encouraging sentiment, the track is a shimmer of soundscapes reflecting warmth, comfort and hope, as they detail the shame placed on people who are trying to love themselves in a world that’s forcing them into hiding.

As a performer, their work has gotten plenty of buzz, with their musical project Trak Joy being ranked on the 25 best songs of the week by CMJ. They were also a featured correspondent for Buzzfeed where they talked news and pop culture while breaking out of gender binaries, as well as being named a finalist at YAAAS FEST: an LGBTQ comedy competition in New York. The track is all about phobias, most specifically the fear of flying. The poignant song also discusses dealing with mental health issues including anxiety. Elliot confides, « A lot of things in life terrify me. If I had to make a list, flying would probably be number one, and right underneath it would be things like “disappointing people”, “taking up too much space”, and “societal pressure to conform to a gender binary”. Airplanes is a song about my relationship with anxiety and all of the ways that fear has shaped the course of my life. » « Airplanes » thrills with an infectious chorus, gritty electro pop soundscapes and an unpredictable mash up of explosive melodies.

Born in the Philippines, raised in New York and currently residing in Atlanta, Georgia, Raquel Lily is an independent singer, songwriter, producer, guitarist and online personality. Raquel confesses how her songwriting is a cathartic, emotional purge. With the simple objective to guide listeners through an impassioned ride, her songs are driven by genuine experiences from an introspective and honest place. Inspired by the likes of Whitney Houston and old school R&B, Raquel wanted to capture a similar essence of synth-heavy, soul soaked music. “For Michael” is an emotive ode to the songwriter’s close family friend who tragically lost their life in 2019. Beautifully simplistic, the exposed guitar chords and heavenly vocals allow the vulnerability of the lyrics to take focus. Washed with dusky hues and comforting melodies, the song questions the reality and reasons for such a passing, and how close the state of being and of not being can really be.

Francesca Louise is an indie/folk singer-songwriter, who’s soulful, Carole King inspired vocals paired with songwriting influences from the likes of Joni Mitchell, Lucy Rose and The Staves, makes this artist one to watch.

Poignant and heart breaking, the new song “For Michael” is an emotive ode to a close family friend who tragically lost their life in 2019. Sat on her bedroom floor slumped against a futon, Louise tearfully penned this melancholic memoir as a way of expressing the thoughts and feelings she had shut away in her subconscious surrounding the loss. Dazed in shock and in a cloud of confusion, the track unfolded into a form of therapy and way of healing, with the songwriter admitting, “At times I surprise myself with what appears on paper. I answer questions that I didn’t even know needed to be answered. Writing is a part of my healing process when life is spinning and events are unfolding. It’s my therapy.”

Wanting to keep a raw and untouched approach to the production, Louise recorded the song at her home in Lancashire with no room treatment and just one microphone.
