Los Angeles/Albuquerque duo The Sometimes Island are back with their new cinematic music videofor hit single « Acapulco », beautifully symbolising the narrative of the tune.

The Sometimes Island are a synth-forward pop band based in Los Angeles and Albuquerque. The exciting and highly visual live band is comprised of charismatic frontman Matt Blankenship Jr and anchored by drummer Nick Lopiano.

Their latest single, “Acapulco” explores themes of escapism and excitement as Blankenship Jr shares, “I like to juxtapose a theme with a sound and have them work together that makes the tension not immediately apparent.” Paying tribute to New Mexico, the songwriter continues, « I wrote Acapulco in Albuquerque, which is an amazing place but a hard word to sing. »

With musical influences from the likes of Townes Van Zandt and Deadmau5, “Acapulco” explores the excitement of beginning a new chapter of life, yet the contrasting sentiment that comes with it. Blankenship Jr states, “I wrote the song Acapulco to capture that listless ennui I was trapped under in Los Angeles, framing it with a fantasy of an ignored lover reaching their breaking point, leaving and abruptly buying a plane ticket.” The narrative almost ironically pairs with a dream-pop backing, harmonic rhythms, John Mayer inspired guitar riff and a truly contagious chemistry.

The accompanying cinematic music video for “Acapulco” beautifully mirrors the song’s story, as we witness the demise of a relationship, where one party decides to flee and head for a better, more wholesome life.

Their forms of expression and musical ingenuity make The Sometimes Island ones to watch this year. With their previous EP

Poster Child is an indie rock band with a psychedelic funk twist. California-born vocalist/songwriter Theresa Gorella and guitarist/songwriter/producer Andrew Royal, who grew up in South Carolina, both met in Music City in 2016. The duo composes all of Poster Child’s intricately arranged music and heady lyrics, though their music is always performed with a 5 piece band.

“We love working with older processes. Film, tape, tube amps… they each have an intentional nature to them. We approach the sound design of our music with that in mind, taking advantage of the unique signal flow of my studio [Silver Tongue Studio] to put some heat on a lot of the main sources, the kind you can only get from circa 1950s-70s gear. When we track it’s immediately nostalgic.” –Andrew Royal

Poster Child collaborates with artist Tyler Champion, who hand draws illustrations for each song they release. Together the artwork and lyrics tell the story of an expanding cast of characters during a single night at Chateau Disco.

Cimo Fränkel was born in Amsterdam, The Netherlands and is currently based in Los Angeles. He grew up around his father who was a funk musician who would invite Cimo to join him in the studio and enlightened him on the DIY ethos of funk culture. At the age of fifteen, Cimo would explore music production and collaborate with other young and passionate Dutch musicians. The musician has cited the works of Michael Jackson and Huey Lewis as highly inspirational to the artist he is today. This latest collaborative release draws strong comparisons to the likes of The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, Frank Ocean and Tate McRae.

Singer Skofee elaborated on working with Cimo Fränkel:

“When I heard Cimo’s original song I was immediately struck by not only his incredible voice, but the lyrics. When I write sadder lyrics, I love tempering them with a “happier” sounding track. That’s one of the things I love most about writing music – combining complicated lyrics with production that makes you want to dance. I felt the original “Where Do You Hide Your Love” had that perfect balance.”

His debut single “November Sky » resembles strong conversational themes. In HOLNE’s words, “November Sky is an inner-conversation of regrets, assumptions and a longing to rekindle a past relationship.” Tinged with an 80’s edge, the track shimmers with symbolic synthesisers, harmonious vocals and a toe-tapping, catchy rhythm, all uniting to effortlessly create an indie-pop anthem that is sure to be the soundtrack of your summer.
