We’ve Been Going About This All Wrong

The Know began in late 2018 when Daniel Knowles suggested to his wife, Jennifer Farmer, that instead of traveling home for the holidays (to the UK and Texas respectively) that the LA based transplants stay put and try to create music together, just the two of them. This would be the married couple’s gift to themselves.

For the next few weeks, they isolated themselves in their home studio with no real plan, just a mutual love of Beach House, Julee Cruise, Ye Ye, The Jesus and Mary Chain, 60’s girl groups, dream pop, and the evocative storytelling lyricism of Patsy Cline and The National.

The result was their debut EP shared in 2020, a stunning blend of dream pop and shoegaze. Entitled

wearetheknow,

the six track

collection of songs provided an unflinching look at the couple, delving deep into the duo’s personal lives by honestly narrating stories from their relationship and life experiences against a kaleidoscopic sonic palette. Leading single ‘143′ melded autobiographical with fantastical lyrics and unfolds as a series of conversations, images, and hazy recollections of a night out. While ‘Hold Me Like You Know Me’ garnered comparisons to David Lynch’s

Twin Peaks

and Phil Spector’s

Wall of Sound

The Know’s upcoming highly anticipated second EP (EP2) is lyrically full of relatable snapshots of love, loss, isolation, uncertainty, sadness and connection. Completed during the pandemic and in a time of intense isolation, the EP was produced by Farmer and Knowles and mostly recorded in their home studio in a short span of time.

Leading single ‘Used to Be’ details the complexities of romantic relationships specifically when they were heightened during the pandemic. Knowles confides,“then of course the pandemic hit, people all around us were having their relationships tested in lockdown with significant others, some relationships came out stronger, some didn’t survive. And on a more universal scale lots of people worldwide were dealing with a loss of normality, loss of connection with other people, suddenly not being able to do simple things like buy groceries, things we’d all taken for granted.” Sonically, “Used to Be” features hazy guitars, warm melodies and atmospheric soundscapes that are on the edge of uncontrollable making for an enthralling listen. The accompanying cinematic music video was directed and created by Farmer and profiles a troubled relationship representing the highs, the lows and the mundane moments in a non-linear fashion.

The second single ‘ME’ is « a recollection of the start of a relationship and events between two people during lockdown but this one mostly covers the good stuff. It’s a love song about the thrill you feel when you connect with another person, » proclaims Farmer. ‘ME’ is an enthralling cinematic slice of dream pop complete with romantic lustrous landscapes and dreamy vocals.

Max Darmon présente son nouveau clip « L’itinérante »

Bassiste professionnel depuis plusieurs années, Max Darmon s’impose comme auteur et compositeur avec son premier EP La Grande Aventure dont la sortie est prévue le 29 mars 2023 chez Antipodes Music.

A vingt-neuf ans, son imaginaire musical rempli de chansons françaises (d’Alain Souchon à Rodolphe Burger en passant par Jean-Louis Murat), ce bassiste, aussi bon vivant avec ses amis que pudique derrière son instrument, a commencé à écrire quand il le fallait, «

».

Formé dans l’univers du jazz, du blues et de la soul, il impose outre ses talents d’instrumentiste, une clarté d’écriture impressionnante. En atteste son premier single, Fuis-moi, sorti il y a quelques mois, et L’itinérante, son nouveau clip. «

Donne-moi, donne-toi Un peu d’importance

» chante-t-il dans ce titre. Associant le thème de la rupture amoureuse à des notes lumineuses d’espoir et d’élan amoureux, Max Darmon nous embarque dans sa Grande Aventure.

Formé dans l’univers du jazz, du blues et de la soul, Max Darmon durant quelques années, rendu hommage à différents groupes et artistes, de The Roots à Stevie Wonder en passant par Moby et Jeff Buckley. De cette diversité musicale naît la capacité de Max Darmon à marier différentes références, teintes et mélodies au sein de son propre projet.

La vingtaine vécue pleinement, et les histoires d’amour lui ciselant le coeur, Max Darmon a consacré ces deux dernières années à mettre en musique et en paroles ce qui méritait d’être dit pour aller mieux et pour offrir son premier projet, La grande aventure. Un confinement, de l’isolement, du temps pour soi et l’envie d’écrire, voici ce que Max Darmon attendait pour faire naître son premier projet : «

C’est une période où pour la première fois de ma vie, j’ai été seul avec moi-même. Ça aurait pu m’angoisser et en fait ça m’a fait mûrir, ça m’a permis de m’aimer un peu plus et de réfléchir aussi sur les erreurs du passé, pour ne pas forcément les reproduire à l’avenir surtout

.»

C’est donc avec un premier titre Allez viens qu’il a commencé l’écriture, isolé dans sa maison du Lot, région qu’il aime sûrement autant que la compagnie de son bouledogue français, le fidèle Gilbert. Thérapie ou médium simplement cathartique, ce bassiste-compositeur a ressenti ainsi, en éprouvant la solitude, le besoin de dire, d’écrire et de partager.

La naissance de ce projet, aventure à part entière, a pu voir le jour grâce à la précieuse collaboration de musiciens venus entourer Max Darmon et sa basse : Florian Robin aux claviers, Romain Roussouliere à la guitare, Wendy Killman et Florian Gouello à la batterie et à la réalisation et direction artistique : Jérémy Rassat. Tout au long des six titres du Ep La Grande Aventure, les mélodies s’accordent aux textes dans une belle harmonie imitative où sont mis en scène tension, jeux, désir et déception.

Brothers Tanner and Peyton Whitt, performing as the adrenalized American alt-pop band RAGS AND RICHES, aim to bring hope and inspire a generation of dreamers. -bat- signe avec Quadrachromie un virage esthétique et scénique avec des chansons en quadrichromie peintes par 4 décennies de vie.

Pour créer ces nouvelles chansons, il est allé explorer de nouvelles thématiques et textures sonores, plongeant dans des nappes de synthés analogiques et autres délices de boites à rythme. Les chansons s’étirent et les mots prennent une autre dimension dans ce nouvel écrin électronique. L’accordéon qui accompagne -bat- sur scène depuis le début trouve ici une place singulière et non systématique, la musique est pour la première fois pensée aussi pour la danse et le lâché-prise.

L’histoire du disque prend corps aussi dans la création du visuel, 40 sérigraphies en quadrichromie, imaginées avec l’artiste Alias Ipin, originales et numérotées, pour accompagner la sortie du Vinyle, des pochettes d’album oeuvre d’art.

Quadra, quatre fois dix ans, quatre couleurs, “

”, explique Baptiste dans la chanson titre “Quadrachromie”. Nite Bjuti is Candice Hoyes, Val Jeanty and Mimi Jones, an evocative improvised trio of Afro Caribbean artists using electronics, vocalism, bass, Haitian drum rhythms, sampling and spoken word to cultivate their narrative journey. They are UMEZ Arts Engagement Grant recipients for their 2022 mixed media installation commissioned by the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, and 2020 recipients of the NYC Women’s Fund in Jazz Music to fully fund their forthcoming debut album.

As inspiration, Nite Bjuti draws from a centuries old Haitian folklore called « Night Beauty,” about a girl whose bones begin to sing in her afterlife, her spirit seeking justice. Nite Bjuti has recently played Nublu Jazz Fest, NYC Winter JazzFest, WBGO live broadcast performance, The Schomburg Center, and Jazz at Lincoln Center. Internationally, they envision their music from concerts at electronic and jazz music venues, museums, cinema and dance and visual art installations. Nite Bjuti plays to rediscover the buried Diasporic beauty in the world, transcendent across generations. Intentionally, they improvise to build layers of intimate community both inside the band and with its audiences. Nite Bjuti debuted at Jazz at Lincoln Center as part of celebrating 2018 International Women’s Day.

Entitled « Fading Moon », the track is the debut single from the veterans of the Los Angeles and Oregon music scene. The pair teamed up with producer Gregg Williams (Sheryl Crow, The Dandy Warhols, Blitzen Trapper, Emmylou Harris) to craft a poignant orchestral folk pop tune.

Andrew of the band confides, « I was never afraid of dying until I had a child. Fading Moon, on the surface, seems like a love letter to my two baby boys. But, in reality, it’s a means to comfort myself from my overwhelming fear of leaving them behind when I die. When pure and intense love is experienced, there is a level of pain associated with it. I’ve never been more happy, but I’ve never been more scared. So this seemingly sweet, folky ditty is really a pretty dark, anxious proclamation. » Musically, the hypnotic guitar riff of « Fading Moon » was written when Dirk was in hospice care, visiting his sick mother. Performing for her brought her joy and « Fading Moon » also represents the magic and healing nature of music.

Alma Mater

is Dirk Sullivan and Andrew Paul Woodworth. The two are veterans of the Los Angeles and of the Portland, Oregon music scenes. Sullivan was signed to Interscope Records with his band Love On Ice and Woodworth fronted Elephant Ride, signed to Sony Records. They have since spent two decades recording and touring in various projects.

Anxious for some musical therapy during the pandemic, the two started meeting in Woodworth’s garage. Sullivan was enthralled with an alternate tuning on his guitar and found himself writing songs at a blistering clip, totally inspired by this fresh reverence for his instrument. He found the perfect partner in Woodworth, who could add pathos and melody to his already provocative landscapes. Sullivan was wrestling with a recent divorce and with the slow demise of his mother. By contrast, Woodworth was about to welcome his first child. They found a kinship in the intensity of their disparate stories. Somehow those contrasting life experiences brought out something completely raw and beautiful and melancholic and utterly explosive in their writing.

Both men love hard and laugh big….both were suddenly unafraid to be uniquely and totally themselves, understanding that in a world full of temporary things, we are a perpetual feeling. The sound became a portrait of combating themes….time versus eternity, strength versus surrender, hard love versus fake hate. With Gregg Williams in the producer’s chair (Sheryl Crow, The Dandy Warhols, Blitzen Trapper, Pete Droge, Emmylou Harris) the recordings became orchestral and vibrant and full of page-turning narratives. It is a dream team for these three Oregonians who have amassed decades of honest, soulful and heartfelt music.

Leading single « Fading Moon » is a poignant folk dipped indie pop track. Andrew of the band confides, « I was never afraid of dying until I had a child. Fading Moon, on the surface, seems like a love letter to my two baby boys. But, in reality, it’s a means to comfort myself from my overwhelming fear of leaving them behind when I die. When pure and intense love is experienced, there is a level of pain associated with it. I’ve never been more happy, but I’ve never been more scared. So this seemingly sweet, folky ditty is really a pretty dark, anxious proclamation. » Musically, the hypnotic guitar riff of « Fading Moon » was written when Dirk was in hospice care, visiting his sick mother. Performing for her brought her joy and « Fading Moon » also represents the magic and healing nature of music.

Alma Mater is a direct reflection of what is happening in the world today as much as it is defined by generations of influence. From its warm and rustic and plush production to its earnest and candid and sometimes irreverent writing, Alma Mater is a collision of opposing forces….like they’ve blown the dust off of an old box in the attic, only to find new pictures inside. « Fading Moon » is the first track off of their forthcoming album and is out now worldwide.

Seule propose des chansons taillées pour la danse ou pour les ballades au clair de lune hantées par des soleils noirs. Sa voix ample, pure et pleine d’âme, éclaire d’une lumière résiliente des textes qui racontent l’emprise sentimentale et les mots plus cruels que des balles (
